Mazie's dress was from 1941, the oldest dress from the collection. And with age came new challenges for deconstruction and reconstruction. At the time of donation, the dress was color-faded from decades in storage. After cleaning and bleaching, only some of the discolor came out, leaving the fabric off-white with some yellow blotches. The fabric, being so old was also falling apart. Sewing was difficult as the satin frayed and disintegrated. The lace took days to remove from the original dress, as too much of a pull and it would fall apart.
The lace from Mazie's dress was picked off and re-rolled into lace yardage. Allowing for pattern pieces to be cut from it. Sewing techniques from the time period of the dress was also utilized. All seams were bound by hug snug finishes, creating a beautifully finished garment from the inside out.
When designing the new version of this dress it was important to keep the timeless look so Mazie's spirit could continue to live on. I incorporated the sheer streaks of lac into the new design but re-invented in a modern way.
